1/12/2010 - Reflection

14 comments:

  1. This class certainly promises to be a lot more challenging than 204 and this can be proven by looking at the first assignment. I think the assignment is going to be one of those, "AHA! I DID IT! IN YO' FACE!" sorts of projects that you do and when you're done you're so excited you sleep for a week.

That said, I think it's challenging enough to keep my attention, but not so much so that it's impossible. Actually, I think it's quite doable. Especially since I get to do Voice Overs. I absolutely adore VOs (seeing as I get paid to do them) so this will be an experiment to see what I can do with them.

This class is huge, by the by.

And the chairs... why the chairs?! I had just forgotten about them and yet they shall forever haunt me!

ANYWAY!. Excitement, Chairs, and Raph's satire. Fun semester? Probably.

  2. I agree with the fun semester statement, Chloe.

I foresee an all nighter tonight for me. I am really looking forward to it though because Raph's classes always kick my ass and I really need it in order to grow as an artist.

Does anyone know of a better search engine than google out there?

Since this is my first class with raph, I'm gonna say that i was slightly intimidated, but i am also very excited about the semester. I feel like brushing off the dust on my after effects skills will help me out a lot (having not used it in over a year).

  4. As disgusting as this might sound, I'm actually kind of glad we get to start the semester off running. I don't I know about you guys but last semester was exceedingly slow and boring for me, it made me feel lazy as a student. As for the 3,600 assignment, well I didn't really expect anything less, theres always that false concept of how professors hold your hand with the syllabi and all that shit in the first couple of weeks. I know Raph prefers bags under our eyes with a hint of loathing for his cynical ways. I hope this class is as ridiculous and awesome as last springs class, all the same people plus a few more. Just remember; He enjoys reading his bad reviews on "Rape" ratemyprofessor.com and we'll be sure to get into a bar at the end of all this and create a nice little tab for him to pay.

And as for chairs, bloody carrots, and old cell phones, just stop it now children.

  5. I write this after taking a break of shame from searching in vain for a mac compatible "automatic image downloader." I'm pretty much going to say the same thing I did a year ago, this looks like an exceedingly laborious ball-buster of a class that I want to stick with to prove to myself that I can brave through such a thing for the sake of camaraderie, my ego, the betterment of my portfolio/skill set and all that.
Raph is kind of like that difficult to appease father figure that you desperately seek approval from, it's one of those rare but utterly satisfying New Media moments when you can pull it off.
Putting all this aside though I really anticipate a great semester, many a tear will be shed but I think we can all make it through to the end provided we don't read anything by Vilem Flusser again.

  6. While I think of it, does anyone know if this poem has to be original or can we just use any old thing.

  7. As much as I dread the amount of time I'll be spending on projects for this class, the one thing I can admit that it's time well spent. Out of all the classes I have taken here, Raph's classes are worth the amount of time I put in. For instance, while last Spring (yes I was one of the "golden students" that Raph spoke of in class) was taxing, almost all of my projects from that class I can use in future portfolios and the like; I can't say that about many classes. I also love how Raph is both intelligent and sarcastic...it makes the class and discussions memorable. Finally, while the projects may be the cause of anxiety disorders among NMD majors, at least they are interesting and not dull.

  8. Even with the large amount of work this class will force me to put in it will be worth it in the end. As of right now I have very few projects I would even consider putting in a portfolio and I'm about to graduate. I'm also very relieved I'm finally taking some classes that will get me really working on something that might not suck!

  9. Back to the drawing board.
Last semester was a bit too easy, so I figured I'd dive back into thinking with this class, looks like Raph won't be disappoint. Good to be back to the steamplant that is my computer, hopefully we can all make it out of this class without too many scars that will remain with us until the last.
Looking forward to the 3600, though I think it may take most of my waking hours in the next couple days.

    Response to Gabe, second posting:
I don't think we are supposed to be using just any old poem, I think we are supposed to make it up. (Thus, the reason for the semiotics discussion, and the concrete vs. abstract section.)

    Good luck everyone!

  10. This class has already shown me that it will be much more challenging then 204. 204 seems like a piece of cake compared to this and I thought I would never say that about any class, ever. Matt, I feel the same way. Last semester was really slow and boring but I am shaking in my boots with this assignment. I knew Raph would give us an assignment that would kick our ass but I never thought it would be to this caliber and I at least thought we would have the weekend to do so. Oh well, life goes on. Whose ready for no sleep until class on Thursday? Psh... Me.

  11. Nothing in todays class really surprised me. Although I did enjoy the slight resurgence of Chair, then again I think everyone did. This whole 3600 Image project is not uncharacteristic of Raph and to be honest I don't mind it. We can all sleep when we are dead. I was glad to hear that we will not be learning any AE, to me it just seems like something you have to jump into and hang on, not something that can really be taught. Also last semester was a bit of a drag so I'm glad to see that Raph is upholding his reputation of ruining his students with work.

    Response to Matt:
I also love the idea of getting ruled the first few days of class. In all honesty coming from Raph I really can't imagine it any other way. Plus if we all do well maybe he will continue to attempt and ruin our weeks instead of our weekend.

  12. Well, I was sort of expecting this from what I have heard from other students have taken 204 with him, but I didn't think the first project was going to be this intense. I agree with Cloe and feel like this is one of the those that you just do what has to be done, then look back on it and wonder how you did it.

Other than the poetry, which is going to be challenging, I feel like capturing the images is also going to be a challenge.

    Response to Zach:
"We can sleep when we are dead" ... great quote, couldn't agree more. Sleep is a waste of time.

  13. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary with what I expected. Not being able to respond to questions really pisses me off butwhat are you going to do. This project will def be time consuming but it should be pretty fun none the less. I can't wait to get though finding all the pictures so I can start putting them together.

  14. This is a good site to find images for the 3600 project. If you have any better ones it would be a big help.
