1/19/2010 - Notes

  1. iChat session today with Raphael from Portland due to the snow. I feel like I shouldnt have mentioned not liking online sessions in my last post...

    Jorgen Leth - Five Obstructions edit on 12 Frames
    -Interesting style, requires creative responses to normal problems.

    ->through this class we will be Showing but never Telling.

    AND NOW some math.
    Euclidian Geometry vs. Cartisian Geometry
    -First Postulate - A Point is that which has no part.
    -Second Postulate - A Line is a point with no breadth
    ->A Point has no position in Time/Space
    -Third Postulate - A Plane has endless lenght and width.
    -> Bound by lines
    -Fourth Postulate - A Form has endless length, width, breadth, bound by planes.


    Cartisian Geometry uses X,Y coordinates, fixed position in time/space. Through this system, Descartes set the ground work for modern forms of physics, calculus, 3D modeling, virtually everything.

    Once Descartes set up a point as an individual, it provided an outlet for a person to become an individual, rather than just being part of a collective - "I Think, therefor, I Am."

    SO what the HELL does this have to do with 12frames???
    -Take each segment on its own identity
    -Each frame as a point, each group as a line
    -A shape is made up of a narrtive OVERALL
    -A whole work can be represented as a plane
    -The narrative resides in the form.


    We search for a meaning, a narrative, in everything. We are trying to find narratives everywhere.

    Didactic - adjective - intended to teach, particularly in moral instruction or alterior motive.
    ->Why is a written narrative less didactic than a visual narrative? -> Something written is given more interpretation by the viewer/reader. However, in a visual narrative, our interpretation is constrained.

    Assignment - watch 12 frames video over and over, with no sound, email one paragraph to raph of your interpretation.
    Also - email one paragraph to raph over the difference between euclidian and cartisian geometry.

    Euclidean - didn't divide things into time/space, line is endless length, plane is endless length and breadth, and a form is endless length, breadth, and depth

    Descartes - locates fixed point in time/space
    - "I think therefor I am."

    Once a specific point in time/space is set, vast amounts of doors are opened, such as triangulation

    "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

    Where does narrative reside?

    At what point do you have more control over the narrative

    We search for meaning in everything

    meaning=narrative (for this class)

    Written word has different abilities than the visual

    2 schools of thought for geometry:
    Euclid-
    1.a point is that which has no part
    2.a line is endless length bound by a point
    3.a plane is endless length and breadth bound by lines
    4.a form is endless length, breadth and height bound by planes

    Descartes:
    fixed position in time and space
    "I think therefor I am"
    graph:thinking vs.existence

    Whole is greater than sum of it's parts
    Why bring this up?
    -Each frame is a point
    -Clip is a line, bound by cut.
    -A plane is a series of edits
    -Form is everything put together

    Narrative: where is it found?
    All of the above.

    When do you control narrative?
    Always, but different in each circumstance.

    As humans we look for meaning in everything.
    -look for meaning within the frame of reference:
    -Less information => wider interpretation

    A stranger walks into a room.

    Written word- opens up for interpretation
    Descriptions can't cover everything

    Things are no longer black and white between mediums.

    Absolute control of narrative? Never.

    Once it is brought out of your head, it can never be perfectly realized.

    Homework:
    watch 12 frames on repeat, no sound.
    Type a paragraph on your interpretation, subject line "5 obstacles meaning".
    Also, a paragraph on difference between Euclidian and Cartisian geometry.

    Euclidean Geometry and Cartesian Geometry

    Euclid- a point at which has no part.

    Euclid doesn't divide time in space.
    * we don't locate time in space.

    - a line is endless in length
    - the extremity of a line are points

    Descartes- when he locates time in space in opens up.

    "I think, therefore I am"

    * Descartes defines a point in time.

    The individual wasn't as important as the collective.

    The location of time in space were revolutionary

    Cartesian Geometry

    Euclid teaches us a very different way to think and expands ideas for us.

    The whole is greater then the sum of the parts.

    12 Frame Project

    - each frame that you work with is a point
    group of frames = line
    form = the overall narrative
    plane = is a series of edits put together

    * where does the narrative reside? everywhere (frame, edit, cut, overall)

    - we search for meaning in everything-- we look at everything and find something meaningful out of it.

    - narratives are everywhere
    * finding a shape in the cloud

    the view interprets what they see.

    a written narrative is more open

    * when you describe something in words you are more open to interpretation.
    - it allows viewer to participate with piece

    - you are limited as the artist to add elements to a piece.

    - The more you show, the more you limit the viewer to participate.

    - The more your abstract, the more you open up imagination.

    - the written word has different abilities then the shown (visual) word.

    * in order to tell something visually the more you show.

    * you can never define things to another person.

    -There is one blog for all the lecture notes to be posted to after each class. You are to take notes by hand and then type them up and post them. This helps with the learning process and helps you remember ideas brought up in class

    -A Reflection is supposed to be posted to a different blog where you are supposed to respond to an idea brought up from class, don't just say the class was "Good"

    For twelve frame assignment, do not shoot edit, shoot to make a long narrative, then edit, No music videos.

    Everything in this class is visual so we should be showing rather than telling

    Euclidian school of geometry:

    Doesn’t divide things into time and space
    A point is that which has no part- can’t be divided
    A line is of endless length- boundary of a line is a point
    A plane is endless length and depth- boundary of a plane is a line
    A form is endless length, depth, and width- boundary of a form is a plane
    “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

    Descartes:

    Defines time and space with an x,y coordinates
    Can locate points with a fixed position in time and space
    Opens the door to a whole new way of thinking
    “I think therefore I am”
    Individual not as value as collective
    Thinking as one axis
    Existence as other axis
    Person can be graphed

    For the Project:
    Consider both individual frames and scenes and what they do as a whole
    Frame = point
    Line = amount of frames
    Plane = series of these edits put together
    Form = Overall Narrative- everything together
    ***Narrative can be found in every piece of the film even down to the frame since humans try to find meaning in everything and will interpret enough to find it
    People will interpret what they see
    That is why story telling leaves more to interpret because the reader is not seeing anything so then has to visualize the whole scene because nothing is given to them
    The moment a frame changes/moves less interpretation is left up to the viewer.
    Written words WILL ALWAYS OFFER MORE INTERPRETATION TO THE VIEWER AND MAKE THE WORK MORE INTERACTIVE
    Either way you can never be sure that people will interpret a piece how you want them to interpret a piece
    **For the project DO NOT MAKE IT LIKE A MUSIC VIDEO
    **ALSO, SHOOT TO TELL THE STORY THEN EDIT, HAVE LONG SHOTS

    -First, second, and third postulates
    -Euclidean geometry centers around the mathematical creation of complex theoretical systems, Cartesian coordinates are designed to overlay a mathematical theorem over the physical world.
    -The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
    -Timelines are a cartesian co ordinate system, cuts are impossibly accurate and non existent differentiations between time.
    -In the written word we are more open to interpretation because not everything is described.

    De Cartes:
    Defines time and space using coordiantes (x,Y)

    The entire narrative is the form

    Humans immediatley try and identify with the meaning or narrative of a subject.

    Narrative is some sort of thing, or friction, feeling, event of something.

    The viewer of an artwork identifies only that which they have prior knowledge of

    A written narrative is more dydactic then a visual narrative.

    In written narrative the reader is given the chance to interpret more meaning then with a visual narrative due to its boundries.

    Some people say that video is not interactive but that only applies to the more concrete your subject matter is and the less chance of interpretation the viewer is afforded.

    Meaning is found in the exchange of two points.

    first time running the class online (this simester.) worked pretty well, for the most part.

    Superimposition

    Sequencial imaging-old hyroglyphs had this, it's not something we've recently created

    Digital film= most useful of newer storage devices to keep sequencial imaging on.

    "A picture's worth 1000 words"

    allows you to have your own interpritation, while allowing others to think differently about your piece as well.

    Context-gallery has different context than showing pictures at home. one's more artistic, the other's more personal.

    Lars von Treir, interested with editing without moving camera.

    Euclidean geometry- more abstract way of thinking about art and sequencial imaging.
    point is one with nothing, line is ended with points, plain is ended in lines, and a form ended with planes.

    Cartesian geometry- more concrete way to think about sequencing.

    Consider this.

    a frame is like a point, a group of frames is like a line. A sequence of groups of frames is like a plane, and a form is the narritive given by the plane of frames.

    what's inside head can't be discribed 100% of the time. It's lost when put to a medium. reading allows for more interpritation, while visuals take away from your ability to visualize mentally what you'd like.
