  1. Today's class was a prime example of why I enjoy sitting in a class room, instead of online chat. You can't really get that "hostile classroom environment" from an online teacher, like you can when you are in the class. Raph really made this class dynamic with his presence.

I also think Raph theory on questions is interesting because most teachers will say that the only dumb questions are the ones you don't ask. Raph has a different policy where they can be and there are a lot of dumb questions. I think this also adds to the dynamic nature of the class.

  2. It was great to have Raph back in person today, class is always more exciting when he is in the room.

Class today was interesting, we were forced to think, and as New Media Majors, we know only to steal ideas... what is this "think" you speak of?

The part of today that had the greatest influence on me today was a small side-comment that Raph made, along the lines of "I'm going to treat this class like the real world."
This, to me, is great! Yes, it means that we will get our asses kicked as far as work goes, and yes, it may result in a hostile work environment, BUT I do believe that Raphael is doing us a large favor by treating us as adults in the real world. If something I have done isnt good enough, I would much rather know NOW rather than having a huge wake up call when I leave school...

  3. This class is a constant back and forth between something I can graps to the complete opposite. I think it was John who said to me after class that Raph does not belive in the non-stupid questions cliche. No Raph deffinately believes that there is stupid questions and he has no problem telling that to your face. So some classes I understand and I learn and other classes I get told my questions are stupid and I am left more puzzled then I started originally. So I give up....

  4. I'm really excited to get to work on this next project. I'm pumped about the fact that we have until Thursday to work on it, too, because I think that while I could do a good job on it for Tuesday, I can really work on the finer details with the extra couple of nights.

I also enjoyed the whole two-face persona Raph had going on today, with the coin flipping to decide when things are due, and the "Ask me questions, and you will be rewarded" statement, followed by a quick remark that your question was stupid. I love it, it lends itself to an exciting class with all sorts of twists not even Raph himself can anticipate!

Response to Rob: I'm with you in the fact that I'd rather know now if my work sucks rather than later, and then get fired for it.

  5. I'm pretty excited to work on the editing on twelve frames project. I have a feeling some interesting work will turn up on next Thursday in class. I want to start to working immediately, I got some fun ideas I want to work with so it should be fun. As I mentioned in previous blogs, Raph is more fun or interesting in person than on camera.

It was a little awkward today when Raph was drilling us for answers on those ambiguous new media related questions where the answer is always 100% more simplistic than any of us would dare to say. I never talk much in my classes for some reason, im usually always like that unless the class is really small. I guess I'll have to say more now though.

  6. Today's class was an "interesting" one in that the hostile working environment certainly held true for this particular class. While I question whether this is the most effective method for this class, I can say that it definitely kept everyone alert and interested. I think everyone in the class felt pretty silly after finding out that we were thinking too complex and missing the more simpler answers for some of the questions that Raph asked. I'm pretty excited that we got a little extra time to do the 12 frames assignment seeing as how I'm kinda unsure of my narrative at this point. I'm interested to see how everyone else's project turns out and the differences between them and mine. Have a great weekend everyone!

  7. I would have to agree with Matt and say I like when Raph comes into class better then over ichat webcamming because it makes the class way more interesting. I think this assignment is going to be a fun one, I am just deliberating on which idea I would like to go with and also the way I want to approach it.

For some reason I was confused as to what we had to write a paragraph for to send to Raph and didn't actually watch the Cuba 1st obstruction and I have to say I really like it. It made me understand the concept of this project more and it gave me more and more ideas as I watched it. I think that 5 Obstructions is probably very interesting to watch and would like to get my hands on it. I watched the preview for it and it seems as though Jorgen Leth is bery stubborn and does not like to follow guidelines from someone else (Von Trier) so it will definitely be something cool to watch.

I am hoping this project will be a piece of cake once I get into it. I feel a little challenged at the moment because I don't know exactly what I am going to do, but I am very thankful Raph gave us a little more time to think about it. I feel the more the he gives, the better things will turn out so I am assuming most of our work will be good.

  8. Todays class was probably the most interesting so far. Raph in the beginning seemed to be relatively unhappy with the majority of us due to the fact that it seemed like we were in a sleep state. I've seen him stab someone before so we should consider speaking up more often. Things seemed to get better towards the end of the class thought. I think that the most interesting thing about class today was the idea of looking at these projects more visually. Making sure that ever thing that we put together is dynamic and exciting, and not static and boring. I originally thought of how I was going to approach the assignment a few hours after tuesdays class, and it was good to get some clarification on the best way to approach this project.

  9. Raph was pretty mad today (seemingly), but calmed down after he got his anger out on that door. Lots of discussion on what a 12 frame edit really should be, and even more on what the perfect human cuba meant. Raphs question/answer periods are a bit harrowing at times, but he's just trying to engage us in the class. The assignment for our 12 frame edit should be pretty fun. I don't envision it being very hard technically, but quite difficult conceptually. At least we didn't have to talk about euclidean geometry this class!

  10. He wasn't really that mad, that is just his teaching style. He has center stage so he likes to make good use of it. I find it entertaining and there is a lot to learn from him. It sounds like he is pretty successful at what he does. A new (second) house and car...
This project will be interesting to see how people approach it differently. The process of coming up with idea and how each of us go about solving it will be interesting to discuss when we critique them.
