Get this book for after break: Proust Was A Neuroscientist

Why is it important to make something new?

    What makes something different?

Toward the end of the semester, we will write about a line a research that we find interesting from the book

    Where do imagination/creativity come from?

What's the difference between music and poetry?
Music has a beat that progresses
music engages primarily thru emotion, poetry the intellect
music is an index, poetry symbolic
words of poetry need to be understood to engage in poetry
    music relies on fulfillment

Difference between beat and rhythm - beat is more persistent

Is a rhythmic pattern the same thing as a beat?

How to create cognitive levels of interaction

    project coming up:
    Collect/record random sounds
My intention will define the piece
words that go into lines, lines are organized into stanzas

    Where does Imagination come from?
    Music vs. Musicality
    Poetry vs. Poetic

The difference between music and poetry is that poetry needs words! music has a persistent beat that doesn't require words.

    harmony, melody, beat, rhythm, chords.

    * A time-based piece doesn't have to have a start/end but it does have to move through time.
    * Music moves through time-- it engages through emotions.
    * Poetry engages through the intellect.

music--index…. why is poetry an index? words.

    Poetry has to have words!
    - Music comes in through the ear (not bunghole)- we feel the emotion immediately.
    - Music doesn't need words to be effective.

    * A beat/rhythm is expected.
