While I took 204 with Raph and kinda knew that the projects were interesting, 304 so far is much more varied in its projects. I mean the way that the 3600, 12 frames, and now this poetry/sound piece has engaged us as students is quite remarkable if you ask me. That aside, the whole difference between poetry and music was more in-depth that I had realized. I mean, of course I knew they were different, but like others in the class, I couldn't really think of exactly how. I think Raph slightly enjoyed squeezing the answers out of us and dismissing the wrong answers, I mean he is human afterall...or is he? To be honest, the upcoming project looks to be both challenging and fun at the same time and all I can say is: bring it. :)
Class went smoothly. We had a long discussion about what the difference was between music and poetry, and I feel as though if we don't know an answer we dwell on it for way too much time. It was hard for me to think of the difference between the two because really all I think about are the similarities more then anything. The one subtle difference would be poetry needs words, and music has a persistent beat. I don't know why any of us couldn't think of it because it seems so simple once you figure it out. I am excited for our new project where we have to record random sounds and make an audio piece out of it. I am ashamed to say that I just thought of an idea for my edit on 12 frames assignment. For some reason I could NOT think of anything and it was making me lose sleep because of it. I have an idea and know how to execute it and when to so I think once I do that I will have plenty of time to make it look nice. I regret starting it this late because Raph was a upset with us, but I didn't want to have a half assed idea and have it not executed properly. Well see how everyone's turns out.
I think the whole idea of actually figuring out the differences between two commonly used methods of time based art is something that is brand new to us as a group. I think in most of our classes, we look over the very basic details, such as the difference between music and poetry, and never even think about looking back at what either of the two words really entails. I'm looking forward to the next assignment, and to collecting sounds. However, I am musically inclined, so I'm going to have to try pretty hard to steer clear of the red flag of changing my poem into music.
I'm still pumped about the 12 frames, and I have decided to do it in Adobe Premiere, and application I've never used, but one I've always wanted to. I've got my footage, and some editing done, and now it is time for the fun stuff.
Today's class was pretty funny. Raph with his fit about the clouds parting and his "butt cheeks" parting was pretty dynamic aka interesting/a bit disturbing. As far as these next two projects go I am pretty excited to see what happens. It should be interesting to see what people can come up with for the 12 frames one. As far as the sound piece goes, I am a little concerned since the pieces that I enjoyed listening to were the pieces that failed the project. Oh well, only time will tell.
Todays class seemed to be right on par with some of the more recent ones. Raph was talking and for the most part he couldn't even get a simple answer out of us. It seemed like we might have been thinking to hard which was actually pushing us away from some of the simple answers he was looking for. Also I'm a bit excited about Assignment 3. Like most people I don't ever read a class syllabus so the assignment came to a surprise to me, and actually threw me for a bit of a loop. I haven't had many opportunities to work with sound since being at UMaine and I'm really looking forward to it.
Today I was jacked on a solid cup of coffee, so I felt like I finally knew what the hell we were talking about. Raph briefly brought up the question "Where does the imagination come from" and it made me think of when I was younger and how creative I used to be, I feel like my many years in the educational system has stripped me of a lot of that which kind of sucks. I'm really excited about our next assignment too because I love working with sound and I didn't expect to get this sort of assignment in this class. I think its quite interesting how Raph asks us these somewhat simplistic questions and every logical guess we have is absolute garbage to him, nevertheless it keeps me awake.
In the discussion on music vs. poetry, I feel alot of what the class was saying was accurate or at least closely related to what Raphael described. He put it fewer words in some cases and in some a bit longer. The biggest difference that we said was poetry focuses on words, and music focuses on sound from instruments (voice included).
I found class to be very interesting today, and am actually excited for the next assignment. Even though I might find it hard to not have a beat in my piece because I'm so used to it from being a percussionist I think it will be fun to use random sounds for the intention of poetry instead of music.
I really didnt know where raph was going for a while with the whole difference between music and poetry. There were a few thing that I thought I had pinned but really didn't. It is pretty interesting to look at it that way and I think this project will be challenging but pretty fun as well...Now i just need to finish 12frame edit first
I love how Raph considers us stupid New Media students. What I really think is that he is tired of us regurgitating textbook and dictionary answers. So for next class, I will try to think more abstractly and creatively and less a robot.
The next assignment will be challenging. Hopefully I will have a beat instead of a rhythm.
The wild goose chases of meaning raph sends us on are often times fairly grating. This was one such time. When we are being tasked with identifying the difference between two nouns, then repeated told we're incorrect because we have missed what is essentially a vague and somewhat situational and contradictory point it just makes it all the worse. The class wasn't all bad however, a short discussion about the following project, our 12 frames project, and up and coming reading snuck in there as well. I look more foreword to the critique classes than the discussion centric ones, so next class should be interesting if not frightening.
