  2. Sam is right in saying that these lectures are a little more insightful. I am glad we are having our class in person rather than online though, because I feel like it helps to be in a room with little distractions especially for critiques.

I found the most interesting part of these lectures to be the point about meaning. After hearing that we look for meaning in everything, I thought about it and realized that we do. It is interesting that we can't just take things the way they are but instead have to try and find "the hidden message" that everything supposedly has.

  3. Some people do take things the way they are, they don't see any message , and some people may look too far. There is a funny joke about the scottish painter and the three black men that touches on this. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6114971302045445070#

I also wish I had watched this before I did the project. I learned everything the hard way, such as AE would crash when you open 3600 images. Some organization is much needed for smoother operation. This is a clearer explanation and you can pause and rewind to understand it fully. However what we miss out on is the personal questions instantly answered for Raphael (but we could just ask later in class or email).
I think our assignment of combining the actual poem in the piece made the work less abstract than with just background music like in the examples. The artist can show a wider range of images accompanied by their words, than trying to figure out the meaning in the examples without the actual poem being spoken. It is interesting the difference between the two.

  4. Ideally online lectures would be tampered with easy and quick access to the teacher. Raph was great about being available online for 204, and that really helped blunt the difficulties of have a class telecasted. As I had missed the first class and was then only given one day to finish A1 you can imagine that I didn't get a whole lot of sleep. Using these as preparation would have been great for me. My only real gripe is that Itunes U doesn't seem particularly well organized. It was quite a stretch to find the correct lectures, though my settings may just be strange.

  5. In response to Sean - I am also really glad we are doing this class in person, for a number of reasons. I feel that Raphael is best experienced in real life, last year in 204 I would find myself frequently bored during the online sessions, be it from technical difficulties, or just the feeling of watching a person talk on a screen. In contrast, Raph is a very dynamic and visual person, and is genuinely more fun to actually have in a class room.

I feel that we were instructed to watch these videos after we turned in our 3600 for a reason. We were all tested to see what we could do in a small amount of time with little to no instruction. The people who dropped the class should have stayed, because I really feel this is going to be a worthwile experience. No, it will not be easy, but LIFE isnt easy. Raphael has worked with time based media in the real world, and he knows how the expectations are, and I feel that he is doing us a favor by not expecting anything less than 200% from us...

  6. The lectures I thought were very helpful, well would have been very helpful. But at the same time I feel like from the beginning of this project I had a good idea of what needed to be done in order to finish this in the time allotted. Raph didn't give us there lectured because I think he was trying to see how resourceful we could be when given not a lot of time to do a lot of work. And also by giving this assignment he successfully scared some people out of the class which is something I feel he also enjoys.

    Response to Rob:

I agree 100% that this was a test. And as you mentioned that Raph does have real world experience and I feel with that is going to be a lot of nights with no sleep and burning eye balls. And I also feel bad for the people who dropped, because before NMD204 I hand't done that much work in a class in 3 years. And from the sounds of things its not going to get much easier, and I'm looking forward to it.

  7. I thought the lectures were quite interesting, I agree with Sam by saying I wish I had seen them prior to do this last assignment, but it seemed helpful. I thought I had a pretty good grasp on exactly what to do for the assignment, I thought Raph did a good enough job of explaining it in class. I think we all got some pretty neat work out of it to show, at least those who finished. It was a bit of a ballbuster, but no one said it was going to be easy. I'm also excited that Raph has been in class, I remember when were all in 204 Last spring, we were broadcasted to a good 75% of the time, and those classes were good but a little more impersonal. Whenever he showed up it was always a lot of fun, so I hope that can keep happening this semester. I have to agree with Ethan, Raphael was available to help after hours, it might have been a few strange phone calls or video chats for all, but at least he's there. I have to agree with Rob and Zack by saying this first assignment was a holy shit test, and it obviously did its job on people, and the class roster seemed a little bit shorter on that thursday. I think it is worth it to do the work because you'll end up with some really nice portfolio work and you'll get to say, "I did this within 30 hours"

  8. I feel the exact same way as what pretty much everyone has said here. The lectures were interesting to listen to because it shows what the previous classes were given as the same assignment. It was also nice to see what they came up with after by watching their projects.

In a way I'm also glad I didn't see too much of what others did so I could be completely creative and come up with my own way of doing things even though I very much did everything the hard way, and the slow way.

I feel that getting projects like this is good for me especially my senior year because it really gives me a good look at what things are going to be like for me when I hopefully get a job in a new media related field. It also made a hell of a great story to tell everyone this weekend!

I'm very excited for what is to come, and hope that in the future I can find resources more quickly, and be able to spend more time on the actual project instead of the media gathering parts or other tedious work.

  9. The lectures like everyone else said were very helpful and it would have been nice if we looked at them earlier then today. Raph basically told us everything we needed to know in class but it would have been reassuring about this project if her saw before hand.

    Response for Sean:

I found it funny how we have to find a hidden meaning to. I realized that no matter what I look at I have to find a reason behind what it means and why they did it. It would be nice to just think its art and nothing else.

I found it very interesting that the assignment for last years class was totally different and a lot less work then for them then us. I definitely agree that it was a test for all of us and to see who wants to be in the class or not. By the looks of it, we all got a grasp on the assignment and hopefully now that we know the pace of the class we can to work more efficiently. Next time I will definitely look at the podcasts because I know there is a lot of valuable information on them!

  10. This two part lecture went over the first assignment the 3600. Some points were made at the begining of the first video that I didn't know. The development of photography and the result of the migration from drawing and painting to photography was interesting. It makes you wonder what is lost when something is to be gained. The video talked about how every expression is augmented by its medium. This is what makes art so diverse and the interpretations even more so. After watching the video I rewatched my piece of work and tried to notice the semiotics of the artwork. This is how each frame relates to its previous frame and differs from its origianl frame.

  11. I think that this lecture was a lot more in depth than the physical one, but I think I actually prefer the one that we had. While I think that a little bit more time would have been great, I really think that the sink or swim method that Raph uses is useful and effective. This will train us to meet deadlines when we reach the real world and need to do this we may not be comfortable doing right away.

    response to Sean:
I alo felt that the section that spoke on meaning hit me in a real way, too. Meaning is everything to humans, whether looking at religion or at war, everyday social interaction or storytelling. I think this is a really interesting phenomenon to explore, and I think it is something we will likely see in the remaining projects for the semester.

  12. I'll agree with Zach that I'm glad we're to be given work that will challenge us in ways we usually haven't been, hopefully creating things we can actually be proud of.

However, what's "hard" is a question to consider. It would be hard to move 500 lbs. of rock 10 feet in 5 hours, it would be strenuous and perhaps one of the most difficult tasks i've ever had to accomplish, but it would be meaningless.

I do hope that our assignments are hard because they are challening conceptually, not by sheer size/time ratio, as the 3600 was.

  13. While I can understand how these online lectures may have helped with doing the 3600, at the same time I can say that the hindsight observed is just as valuable. Like the previous classes, I feel that the 3600 project wasn't so much focused on the acutal product itself (though that's an important part) so much as the process to get to that point and to be able to find the tools needed for the job. To be honest, I spent a majority of my time during the 3600 project looking for tools that did what I needed them to do; I must have looked over and installed over 50 programs/applications in search of what I needed. Of course, this doesn't mean that all of the projects will follow this same pattern, but I think that they are some of the most valuable because they give us insight as to how to approach a similar problem we may have in the near-future.

    Reponse to Sam:
I'm pretty sure that all the classes this semester will meet in the actual physcial classrom, save for special circumstances such as Raph traveling or something. I think if we spend any more with the online classes in addition to these kinds of circumstances it will be extra material to supplement what's been said in class much like the ones we just watched. I find these types of "supplements" very effective because they're extra information and some areas that we may not have had time to cover in class or that are simply better shown over the web.

  14. Raph's first lecture focused on the history of time based media and how it progressed from an oral tradition to present day media. I thought it was important that Raph stressed the importance that the viewer should interact with the ideas and narrative surrounding the art work. New media focuses so much on the project interacting with the viewer when it should be the viewer interacting wiht the idea and becoming a participant.

The psychokinetic reaction or the suspension of deibelief is something that we as a class should strive for with our projects and all future work for that matter. I want people to become so immersed in my projects they forget about their surroundings.

The guest speaker Milan Kohout spoke about the horizontal communication compared to vertical communication. Vertical consists of phones, internet and anything that requires a middleman in order to communicate. I found that he never actually talked about what his art physically was and more about his views on how communication should be. While I agree that vertical communication has its flaws (texting not being as personable as talking to someone in person), it still has improved society's ability to communicate information and news to the masses. I don't have quite the same view as this guy. Honestly, I really wanted to hear about his art work and not so much a slanted rant about communication.

  15. intro
I really liked how Raph begins the intro by taking off his glasses. Very classy and professional, haha. This was just a basic intro but there were a couple things I was confused about. A, didn't think we were allowed to use iMovie. Personally I use Finalcut so it's not a big deal for me I hate imovie but it might confuse others. Also, Raph makes it seem like we won't be having really class times so its basically an online class. I am just wondering if these days are scheduled or if they are just going to be random days that we dont have to show up. If they are I hope we are notified prior to showing up. I live a little ways from campus and sometimes need to find rides so knowing ahead of time would be key. Other than that I think this class will be very interesting and can't wait to get started.

    1A)
This first online lecture talks about time based design and how we got there. Raph talks about the first images, to paintings, and then to the photograph. And of course after the photograph quickly came film. It's interesting to hear him talk about these things, lets say in his own context. What I mean is that especially for me having been taking new media and art courses among others for over three years I have heard almost every one of my teachers give a rendition of how images have evolved into what we have today with high tech digital cameras and video recorders. Everyone tells it a little differently with their own examples and their own interpretations. This was a nice quick intro to time based media.

    1B)
This lecture was complete deja vu. Obviously very repetitive because we have already gone over this in class before we did the project and then of course doing the project. I'm not too sure why we even had to watch this video now. I felt like I was moving backwards. But either way i guess now I know a little more about the project that we just did. Not sure how much of a response is needed.

  16. 0) Giving the broad overview of what the class will be like, and giving a list of what we need to know, what we should be familiar with, and what is expected. Granted, we aren't an online course, i feel like having us watch this would have been a good lesson/homework assignment for the first class.

1-1)I feel like the video's we watched were much more informative about what we went over last week than what we had been given. But i think that what this did was made us think about the situation, and try to assemble what we felt worked for the project. Coming back to the projects idea with a much deeper discussion on how to interperate and build the pieces gave way to some (at least in my mind) hidden undertones of how we pieced the pieces together. I feel like now i have a much better understanding of our last project, even though i don't feel like i got it before, when we started the project on tuesday.

1-2) "we look for meaning in absolutely everything", i love this quote. I love reading some old historical based things, and the list of old meanings we used back in the old days made an interesting point. I found that working with my project, as raph talked about working with organizing, i'm glad i found a way to orginize my project to make sure it didn't get all cluttered and misused. The differences between concrete and abstraction is explained in depth. Also, it would have been nice to know i didn't have to make a fully realized piece.
