2/2/10 - Reflection

9 comments:

  1. Today's class was less intense than those in the last few weeks, Raph seemed generally in a good mood. I think he was just starting to feel the effects of all the rum he drank in Puerto Rico over the weekend.

Today the biggest thing that I took away from class was the comparison of video to story,
Showing through Telling vs Telling through Showing
For what ever reason, this really jumped out at me as the culmination of what Raph has been preaching about the last two classes with narrative/story and poetic/musical.
For this project we really want to do both. We want to use sound to show through telling, as well as the structure of the sound to tell through showing.

  2. Todays class went rather well. It didn't seem like it took much for Raph to get what he wanted out of us. There was no "come on guys think", so I can only assume we were getting it. Also I'm kind of glad that we didn't go over our works in progress, what I had put together was a bit odd and I'm not sure if it has as much of a narrative as I originally thought. Also I guess I'm a bit confused on how to make it close to a story without being to literal. I guess I'll just make a slightly more detailed narrative?

    Response to Rob:

I agree with you on your favorite part of class. When Raph was talking about show and tell, cinema versus literature my eyes opened up a bit wider and kind of got me thinking. Mostly about how I was upset that I didn't think of it, but nonetheless still the most powerful thing I pulled from todays class.

  3. I think today went very well compared to other classes that we have had, and I can say that I learned from it as well. Who knew show and tell was so awesome? Well, I mean.. educational.

I'm looking forward to hearing the final results for this upcoming project as well, I think that this conversation really helped people understand what Raph is looking for. Hopefully.

One of the things that we seem to be overlooking, however, is the blending of the poem and musical. I think this is a conversation for another time, but I also think that it is important to think about. Maybe a topic for another time?

  4. Today's class cleared up some questions I had about the assignment. Especially the question of what we had to do with the poem, which we don't actually have to end up writing. So that was a sigh of relief. I also feel like there is a lot more to this project than any of us may understand. For example, Raph wants a story, not a narrative, which until today I hadn't really seen as that different, and he wants it done with sounds that were collected without the intention of being used or ordered to create such a piece.

I look forward to next class, but am also nervous of the criticism I am sure we will all receive.

  5. I thought class today was going to be way different. For some reason I thought it was going to be a remote session but Raph was here and feeling a little hungover so I kinda felt bad about that. I liked how class went today. We went over what his expectations are for our next assignment which is good because I was a little confused about that. I am glad he didn't show our work in progress because mine was a little iffy and I wasn't too sure of what I was doing yet with the sounds.

I think I am still a little confused as to what he wants. He doesn't want literal but he wants a story.. I feel like with a story you have to somewhat be literal, but I think I have a grasp on what I would want to do.

  6. I was very pleased that Raph talked so much about what he expected from this assignment, but I still fear that like the last assignment there will be something he didn't say or I missed that he will really want to see in my piece, and it won't be there.

I'm going to follow his instructions to the best of my ability, and hopefully this time I won't be in the situation I was in last class.

I also enjoyed the lecture about the difference between story, and narrative. I had always thought of the two words of being as different as he explained it, and am curious to see if we can get close to telling a story through random sounds.

  7. Hangovers suck and they ruin everything, personally if I was hungover and I had to teach a class I'd probably punch at least one of my students. Class provided a little bit of clarity for this assignment. I personally love working with sound, and I really think sound is more important that the image in most cases. Usually, we don't pay attention to sound because it is always expected. Imagine if a foley artist working on the sound score decided to correspond incorrect sound to the objects being shown, it would be infuriating to the viewer, but I think we're listeners first. I'm both excited and nervous to continue working, i'm going to do my best to create another non-linear narrative without voice or music, should be interesting. The examples online are a bit interesting, I was relieved we didn't have to write an actual poem and set sound to that, I was almost positive we had to do that from previous lecture, I guess i'm an ass.

  8. Now Raph can't be pissed at me on thursdays for coming to class hungover anymore ha. That shits funny to me although woodmans doesn't really compare to Puerto Rico. I have to tell you that hearing about Raph's weekend was the only hope for me to feel that my future won't be so boring. I am interested in the work that Raph did and feel that a lot of new media teacher don't show most of their outside work.

today's class was a good one more relaxed then usual and seemed to be more on the more humours side. I was more drawn to the end of class when we were talking about telling vs showing and I think that is going to play a key factor in this project. I think the ironic thing is that we cannot use words or images.

  9. I never thought there was any difference between story and narrative, it just goes to show you that there are much more things that we have to learn as students even on material we THOUGH we knew. I found that this class went very well in that the goals for the sound project were made a lot more clear and the reasons for doing the assignment. Will anyone be successful? Possibly. Will we have fun getting the project together and done? Absolutely. Like I have said before, even though the projects in Raph's classes are very intense, the work pays off in that you actually learn something and end up having a piece that you're very proud of.
