2/4/10 - Notes

  1. 2/4- Reviewing projects:
    Need to label your projects correctly.

    My project: First to go. didn't quite follow the intention. Probably the worst of all to go first.

    everyone used literal sounds. they needed to be more abstract.

    everyone's piece was too literal, linear, and unimaginative.

    Next project: no hw over weekend, but project will be due thursday before break.

  2. To Recap on todays critique,

    Although some people were closer to the mark than others (Zack, Sam, Jade, Matt) the class as a whole was too literal in its sound poems. They were too linear, and we as a class "failed" the assignment.

    Next assignment will be given on Tuesday, due after 3 weeks, with in progress critiques. (MIDTERM)

  3. Class Notes
    2.4.10

    Everyone did it wrong and pretty much failed.
    All of them were too unimaginative and linear.
    Need to think story first, needs a crescendo with begging middle and end.
    No hw, but will probably all have to redo this piece.

    Midterm assigned next week, going to be super hard and due the Thursday before spring break.

    Critiqued Sound Poems

    Mostly all projects lacked imagination and had too abstract a narrative and little story

    Midterm project coming up to be assigned next Tuesday

  5. NMD 304- Notes: 2-4-10

    Raph is here- really late.

    Looked at Assignment 3

    Josh- no clarity/narrative was to hard to understand.
    Jeremy- sounds were confusing, but narrative was there.
    Bekah- feeding cat
    Jeff- good job layer sounds (better)
    John M- abstract
    Ethan- washing dishes, too long
    Dylan- most distinguished with stanzas
    Sean- home projects
    Matt- failing machines
    Sam- day in the life
    Zack- world ending, best
    Me- ?
    Rob- getting caught
    John H- rhythmic
    Kristy- driving a motorcycle

    FAIL!

    wasn't imaginative enough
    * no hw for the weekend.

  6. What is the difference between narrative and organized sound?

    1 layer you can hear
    2 layers work well
    3 layers you can distinguish
    over 5 layer you are left with white noise

    Story follows a circle and has a climax and nobody did that in their piece and thus we all failed.

    Midterm due the thursday before break

  8. Notes 2-4-10

    Critique

    Joshua Smith- Plane getting shot down, interesting narrative, hard to decipher, good arrangement of sound

    Jeremy Boulier--> Doing drugs, meth lab, close narrative

    Rebekah Doherty--> Cat Interruption, feeding the car

    Jeff--> Taking out the trash

    John Mondor--> Good Arrangement, art Project

    Ethan--> Dishes, Dishwasher, Boring-->Shorten up

    Dylan--> Preparation, editing, printing, car battery dying, waking up, driving, school work

    Sean Cambell--> Morning routine, construction

    Sam Hoey--> Back of a bowling alley, weekend of his life

    Zack Glidden--> End of the world

    Jade--> Ticking, knocking, teapot, alarm

    Rob--> food prep, someone seeing something they weren't supposed to see

    John Hicks--> Has a beat, coming home after a long day

    Kristy Yeaton--> Driving a motorcycle

    All of them fail because you suck and they're linear, c'mon.

    no homework this weekend.

  9. We went over everyones sound piece and he felt that we all were not innovative enough with our narratives.

  10. - Critique of A3
    - 3-5 layers of sound you can hear
    - Anything more you will begin hearing white noise
    - People are not using there imagination enough
    - Everyone failed to meet the goal
    - Up coming midterm should be on par with the type projects
    - We will probably end up re-doing A3

  11. Critque of Sound Assignment 3

    Everyone failed the assignment.
    We weren't imaginative enough or had a clear enough narrative.
    We will have to redue A3 in the future.

    No homework for the weekend but the MIDTERM assignment will start next week.

  12. How can you organize the sounds to do your intentions?

    when creating a narrative, be aware of what you are doing and what you want to do

    3 - 5 layers are fine, more than that you can get white noise

    explanation of your piece determines if it is successful for this assignment, but as whole we all fail.
    too linear

    think of story first

    mid term project
    due thursday before spring break

  14. -A3 critiques. Raph doesn't like 'em.
    *Hated mine

    -No homework over the weekend, nice break.

    - Around five layers differentiation are the most a human can perceive in some senses. I learned that in highschool psych.

    -No story and climax in the pieces, we all failed. You know what they say when everyone in the class fails an assignment. Time to describe it better.
