  1. NMD 304- Notes

    * We will watch 2 versions of Alice in Wonderland
Final- create story for reality to your wonderland.

    - Go from 3D to 2D figure ground... look @ figure/ground relations.

Perception: exploring thought- new media is not new

virtuality- big push of the 21st century
    * There should be no one way of interpreting a story.

we become lost in imaginative worlds.
Jules Verne- write a paragraph and send to Raph. imagined technology and travel before they were even real.

we should be imagining and imagining should be encouraged.
    * imagining is not impossible! the book should help us imagine.

    * how has perception changed and altered? think about it.
    * make the final project a rich experience.

    * create complex pieces, start now and try to think of something interesting and cool to make.
    - lead the eye to one spot, you know the spot.

    * make abstract! no linearity! limit color choices, you should use contrasting colors.
real world -----> made up world
    make beginning very effectual

look up- chel white, john blonowski, bob able

    A6 due on Tuesday!

  2. Watch 2 versions Alice in Wonderland

Create simple short story "Here to There" like

    Can be symbolic, avoid linear

Character needs to find a way out

    3d-2d (figure-ground, perceptual relationships)

    Play with illusions

Imagined world needs to be flat world/weird/appear dimensional

Need to understand power of imagination and threat that computers have in limiting our imagination

Become lost in immersion of other's imagined worlds like games limits us

Book is about how perception is altered

Final piece needs to be interesting exploration in perceptual discord, wild and cool visual/sounds

Can lead viewer with focal point and at same time digress with something else

    LImit color for easier time

If color IS USED, contrasting colors

    Only narrative structure limitation:
real world -> imagined world -> gets lost -> interacts which helps them escape

    Bob Abel - Abel Industries

due last week of regular school

  3. compare the three versions of Alice- oldest, burton's and the other one.

    Final piece:
    Create single short story
    from here to "wonderland"

bringing a 3d person to a 2d world. using figure ground relation.

Jules vera- send paragraph to raph

create a piece to be interesting/cool/complex.

if colored- use strongly contrasting colors

and try to use the things they find to get back into the real world.

look into chell white, bob abel

To get rid of some artifacts in after effects:
    blur in photoshop

    or

export video, import it at 15 fps, then export it, then import it again, bring it back to 30, and should smooth out the artifacts.

Final Project due last week of class.

    short story
can use other person doesn't have to be yourself
    they can be annimated
    3D- 2D figure ground - perceptual illusion
    effects driven
    explored graphically
flat lands- illusion of space and depth
use color but for a reason

want it to have a different meaning after viewed more than once
can change focal point of piece
want focal point with other things going on

    -Advertising
FINAL IS DUE LAST WEEK OF CLASSES - WILL HAVE TIME TO REVISE

    New media-
    not new at all
augmented and virtual reality is new thing
    no one way of interpreting
    importance of imagination
danger of creating fictional worlds is that it kills imagination for others
    immersion in worlds
Jewels Vern imagined things before they happened
need people to dream and create things

    For my piece-
    use blurr
export then import at half the frame rate
export import at double the frame rate

virtual worlds rob us of imagination

    jules vern-
famous author, (Read some of his books)
    -dream

final project-interesting piece in intellectual dischord

things happening away form the focal point
    -flatworld turns into 3d
-use strong, contrasting colors only when needed.
