4/8/2010 - Reflection

  1. Class today was a bit intense toward the end. It was different getting to hear what others thought about the pieces instead of what Raph was thinking about them. I thought all of the pieces today were very unique and well done. I am worried about how I'm going to pull together all the ideas I have been having for the final into one narrative. I am also anxious to see how class is going to be on Tuesday when it run by students instead of the professor.

  2. I think that it was interesting to see what people thought about the pieces, but I liked the first part of the critique better, when people weren't being put on the spot to provide good comments. I think that when the discussion was open to everyone, more good feedback was there, and it was nice to see all of it come in. 20 heads are better than one.

  3. Today was interesting as far content. Raph was late, so we watched all the videos, and commented to ourselves on what we thought was good and bad. With Raph showing up, we each critiqued someone elses work. To me, this doesnt work as well as Raph telling us about our work.. Yes, all of us know something about what to do for the assignments, but I feel that it should be collaborative. Im glad that Raph was able to review my piece last class, because I feel that I got more out of his review than I would have from others in the class. There should be a way to find a happy medium. Raph should give us input, because thats part of the reason he is there. We pay to have someone who knows his shit; not to have 20 other people tell us what they think.

  4. todays class as about intense and i perceived it to be. I was wondering what type of mood Raph was going to be in when he finally showed up. what i don't understand is why Matt can't teach the class when Raph is not available. If he is getting paid for the class or at least receiving credit he should have to do some more then just take notes and set up the camera. Other then that the last projects were as i thought they would be and I hope that everyone steps the game up for the final.

  5. This is becoming an all too familiar trend in a lot of my classes. Someone doesnt like something so then the teacher switches the whole dynamic of the course to their way, and I dont learn anything. I'm not going to sit in a class where another student in that same class is going teach. Thats fucking stupid and a huge waste of time. It's really cute how they need to learn their lesson but they can do it on their own time when they graduate If they hate the class then dont come at all, its easier for everyone else that way. If this is really going to be the way class is from now on ill just go home and work on my final, I paid for a professor, not a pessimistic classmate.

  6. Todays class was a bit different because we got to hear what everyone else thought about each others pieces. That past was pretty good but it seems like we might have missed some big things. It was still an interesting way to do things, and went much faster then past student critiques I have been a part of.

    Response to Matt - 2nd.

  7. I really didn't enjoy todays class. Raph was late and we went over everyones piece, and once Raph was there we did it all over again. I know Raph is trying to prove a point but in all honesty, hes the teacher and he should do what he wants, not what a student wants him to do. That's why he has authority. I hate how unpredictable classes are, I wish for once we just had back to back classes that were similar in pace and consistency. I love hearing feedback from other classmates and I also love hearing feedback from the instructor. I just don't understand why we can't combine it once in a while. It doesn't totally screw up the class if no one interrupts. We are all grown ups and need to use our manners or else class gets shit on.

  8. Even though I wasn't in class today, from what I've read it seems that the class ran the class for half of the time. While I think it's interesting that this kind of approach was sampled, I think that a balance between Raph and student-run critiques would be for the best. Raph always has amazing insight on our projects and at times I think students do too. On another note, after a ridiculous amount of blood, sweat, and tears I got my project properly exported only after having to pretty much start over and piece it together again. BUT it's done and I'm excited to get going on the final project.

  9. Thank god the showing was done. My project i don't feel held in comparison's to the others today, but that was partially due to me being a n00b at after effects. I was glad that everyone felt my driving scenes looked good though, at least one part of the entire piece didn't look horrible. Gripes aside, i did enjoy working on the project, and hopefully by the time i get done with the next one i'll have a better grasp of after effects and the amazing stuff it can do.

  10. A rough day. Raphael seemed a little out of it. I thought it was good to have us talk about the pieces individually without Raphael there. Then the transition after he showed up and had us each explain the pieces pressured us to be more descriptive and clear.
the next project is gonna be more crunched time wise i feel. more pressure to hammer out the work, but more freedom in what we wanna do. With the experience we had with this previous piece, I am really interested in the variety of work that will be shown.

  11. It's amazing how quickly we can watch these videos without bickering or confusing question and answer sessions. I think the student critiques work well, though a professorial critique in theory should be rougher and more truthful. I think a great balance would be to have both, rather than any extreme. Raph was gone for a good bit of the class today, and seemed a little mad once he got back, though that could just as well be the after effects of what was probably a harrowing experience at the hospital. I think the coming project will be interesting, though the short term for development of an idea in regards to the storyboard will probably cause issues with a few. Still, they aren't set in stone regardless.
