I liked the discussion we had today, I think that the discussion started by Dylan was particularly interesting. I think that the topic of memory is an interesting one because it is so closely tied to the personal human experience, and it's funny to see how defensive people can get about it.
I liked class today, it brought up a lot of interesting topics again and related a little better to new media. Having in Raph in class helped because he would jump in when we were close to a new discovery and push us to get to it. Very excited to have working days next week.
Today felt more like what Raph's class was in 204 last year, with more theory based topics. I couldnt help remembering "Chair is Chair" and "I can dip a bunch of carrots in a bucket of red paint, throw them at the wall, and call it Chair, but that doesnt make it Chair."
In all seriousness, discussions like this make us think differently, and I think that is something that is missing from alot of NMD classes. We are asked to think linearly, or just read something and repeat what was said in the reading, or read "What Is New Media" 65 times. THIS seems to be working far better, at least for me.
Class went well today. Not everyone got to discuss the book but everyone who did had really interesting topics to discuss. The whole discussion on memory and everyone in it being fiction is a little hard for me to agree to. I think in some aspects memory becomes fiction once it's been a couple years, but some people really have great memories to the point that they can recollect everything that happened that day. It doesn't matter how long it's been. I don't know, maybe that's just me but whatever. It was good to talk about and I'm glad Raph let everyone chime in without any fights!
Today's class was definately another good discussion session. I feel like this has been a great way to bring up things that even things that the teacher's might forget to bring up, and us as students don't have to feel like we're just there for the grade. I've enjoyed the discussion sessions and feel they've really been a good idea to integrate into the class.
Like others have said, I thought today's class went really well. I found that the method we're using to discuss the material really gets us to engage it on a deeper level than in other classes. It's a simple concept really, using the book to form a question and then answer that question using the book as well. I found that since I'm so focused and channeled with my thoughts, that I engage the material more so than I have in other classes too, which makes for a really good class. Have a great weekend everyone and remember shooting next week!
The class discussion was really productive today. I felt a majority had a chance to contribute. Talking about video and it's accuracy, I wanted to bring up the point of how the equipment interferes with our experience as well. Having a camera in the room causes people to change how they interact in that altered environment which further distances us from truly capturing reality.
going on video, and capturing moments... when we tell stories we alter them as we retell them again and again, just as memories when we remember them the way we want to. What does this say about historical events that date way back. Nowadays we can record events to remember what exactly happened, but we still don't share the same experience as actually being a witness to the event as it occurred.
Good discussion day. I think it works out better when we spend most of our time discussing the material rather than searching for the random catchphrase raph prods us to say like we've been doing previously. We didn't speak much on the big project, but I suppose we know what we need too regarding that.
todays was good, I liked the opinions that people had and am ready to do more discussion then week
