4/13/10 - Reflection

  1. Today's class a little lighter and open than usual. We opened up some fairly interesting conversation on perception. I particularly took interest to the notion that humans are developed in a way that we must associate meaning with everything we see, hear, or read. I see it as a challenge to create something that people would not take anything from. I think it is easier to do with sound and music over the written word. The difficulty in the written word is that it comes predefined in history. The ascribed meaning to a word is immediately associated with an image or memory in the brain. The only sensory reaction that words can activate in the human brain are based off experience. The only moveable variable with the word is known experience through that word, otherwise their meanings remain a constant in time.

  2. todays class was very different from the usual. John and Ethan were assigned to teach the class over the readings in proust. The discussion was interesting and boring all at the same time. I found the context to be interesting but I found the question answer part boring. I was not keen on the structure of the class because I thought the questions were ambiguos. I did however like the last part of the class when we talked about science and art and felt that the class was more engaged at that point.

  3. Good stuff. I think that the whole student teaching idea worked out very well, and I think that by doing it, people read the book more closely, and tried to figure out what was really going on. I think that next class we could push it a bit more, getting more in depth on the topics rather than just citing what we have already seen in the book. Looking forward to the green-screening tomorrow and the discussion on Thursday.

  4. I enjoyed todays class. Interesting discussion topics were brought up and it was a lot more open than usual. I don't know if it would have worked has well if Raph was there in person. John and Ethan did a great job leading discussion and really did a good job not adding their own views and only asking questions. I hope I can do as well when it is my turn.

  5. The student teaching idea worked out considerably better than expected. I feel like thursday will be another good class. I wouldn't mind though if the teacher could at least make 1 or 2 statements, or at least share their idea once before passing it on. I get the teaching effect is lessened, but maybe if they said something before they got done with their few minutes, than they won't have to struggle with JUST questions. Just a thought, though.

  6. Today was a really interesting and different class in that students led the discussion for a good chunk of class time and made some really insightful comments on the book. I think this discussion style really helps us get involved in the reading and get at the core of what Lehrer is trying to express in his writing. I'm excited to continue the same style Thursday where you bet I'll be more prepared in case I get called on to lead.

  7. I really enjoyed todays class. Ill admit i was scared as hell because I didnt think I would be able to even begin to get my point across without pleasing raph. I was kind of expecting to be interupted and told I was wrong. It was really beneficial that it didn't happen because I was able to get the hang of it and questions came more easily and continual rather than one random question after another. I agree with slyfloxx who ever that is because it was hard to just ask questions. Sometimes people are so close and you just want to reiterate what you were looking for to gain some clarity and connect it to the next point. I really enjoyed this book. It has opened me up to some things going on in my head and make sense of some of it. Looking forward to next week and digging into some of the other chapters we didnt hit today especially proust.

  8. a lot of ideas were passed back and forth, conversations were being juggled almost non-stop. looks like the book is a good discussion and livened our class in opinion. I feel it is very productive to discuss our own ideas and feelings on the book, it has great potential for our own future products as well as build upon our own philosophies. Every point and opinion that was made today impressed me and some stole the words right out of my mouth, I was very entertained.
